COAL COMPANY AND RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.
CONFLICT AT WELLINGTON. [Per Press Association.! WESTPORT, Jan. 22. The Westport railway department and the coal companies are in conflict over a charge of £3, which the Depart, ment is making for special trains for the carriage of coal. The charge has never been made previously, the Railway Department being content formerly with the freight on the coal, which amounts, inclusive of handling, weighing, etc., to close on £1 on the truck (2s 6d per ton on 7f tons to _ the truck), with a minimum of say about 30 trucks to the. train. The companies contend that extra trains should be run to suit the exigencies of the shipping and bar harbor, and to facilitate the working of tife' mines as regularly as possible, but the Railway Department hold that every special service should he additional to the freight paid for.
