THE KINGSLAND ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER. [Pei*. Press Association.l AUCKLAND, -Jan. 24. George Olliver, charged with attempting to murder his wife at Kingsland. and with -attempting suicide, appeared at the. Police Court to-day. A remand for a week was granted, but on accused's counsel applying for bail on the ground that imprisonment was affecung the accused's health, the police objected because Olliver had told a constable he was not sorry for what he had done, and only wished he had to meet the end of justice by the last sentence of the law. The application for bail was adjourned. A CURIOUS AFFAIR. Near Dargaviile last week a man was discovered by some bushmen suspended to a tree by his braces. They cut him down and went to get assistance to carry the body to Helensville. On their return the supposed corpse had disappeared. Later on the man was discovered, and was brought to Auckland to-day in charge of a policeman. THE WANGANUI FIRE. WANGANUI, Jan. 24. The following are corrected insurances in the Rutland Hotel fire: Hotel building, insured in the Ocean Officefor £6OO and London and Lancashire office for £600: total, £S2OO. Davis, stock in the New Zealand office for £SOO and in the Yorkshire office for £SOO • total, £IOOO. Aynsley, stock. North British £400: fittings; North British £100; total, £SOO. FIRE AT GORE. GORE, Jan. 24. A fire at 4.30 this morning destroyed a. house owned by John Latham, and occupied by Thomas Dove, at EastGore. Dove was awakened by the craekling of timbers and by suffocating smoke, and the family had to make a hasty exit in scanty clothing. Nothing was saved. The house was insured in the Victoria Office for £2lO, and the furniture and effects in the State office for £2OO. Dove estimates his* loss at £l5O over the insurance.
