UNITED STATES TARIFF.
CABLE NEWS.
ITS RELATION TO BRITISH COLONIES. United Purus Association— Coi-yiuuirA (Received January 24, 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 24. Tho “Economist” says that ' the maximum American tariff may be used against Canada owing to the French reciprocity treaty being regarded as undue discrimination, but the grounds for withholding the minimum from other colonies is much weaker. It has been understood throughout that America did not object to preferences between the colonies and the Mother Country, and probably the granting of 'the minimum tariff to Australasia, South Africa, and Egypt is only p#stponed. Reuter states that colonial opinion bxpectcd the American action. The protectionist dominions must now follow Canada’s lead and enter into direct negotiations.
NEW ZEALAND’S POSITION
The Hon. AY. Hall-Jones, who has recovered and returned to his office, states that the whole question depends on how far Now Zealand desires to meet American requirements.
