George Drewitt, aged 47, formerly permanent way railway ganger for 17 years, now a farmer, was found by bis children hanging dead from the limb of a tree near his house at Kauriholiore. The cause is unknown. He leaves a wife with several children.

SEAMAN DROPS DEAD. WELLINGTON, Jan 25. A man named William Howarth dropped dead at Trentham racecourse on Saturday. He had iust purchased a ticket of entrance to the course, and as he passed into the enclosure lie was .seen to stagger and fall. Ho was lucked un dead. Deceased was about -10 years of age, and is believed to have been a sea-faring man. A CHILD’S BODY FOUND. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. Early this afternoon the body of a child was picked out of tho river Avon in the upper reaches near Wairarapa. Terrace. The child’s, body was first noticed by a man named Bennett, who told another man named Lnrraninn of what he had seen. Larraman brought the body to shore with a stick, and lifted it out of the water on to the river bank. The body was quite naked, and had evidently been in the water for some time, for, in addition to being discolored and somewhat decomposed, the right foot was missing, having presumably been bitten off by eels. The police were informed of the mot ter, took possession of the body, and removed it to the- morgue. It was afterwards found that the body was that- of a. still-born child, and so- no inquest will be held. RUN OVER BY A TRACTION ENGINE. Yesterday morning a man named John Hall, upwards of 60 years of age, while crossing Charles Creek, Kaiapoi, was knocked down and run over by a traction engine. It appears that one of the hind wheels passed over deceased, crushing in his chest . Death was instantaneous.
