DUNEDIN GAS WORKS.
A COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY. [Pica Pukhb Association.l DUNEDIN, Jan. 25! A committee appointed by the City Council (consisting of members of the gas committee, with the exception of Cr. McPherson, who declined to act, and the addition of Cr. Douglas, who had raised a serious question relative to the construction of a new retort heme and generally as to the efficiency of tho plaint, its erection and working) commenced an inquiry last night. The Mayor was appointed Chairman. 'Hie questions as formulated by Cr. Douglas were adopted as the order of reference. Cr. White said he also had a reference to submit, and lie was given an opportunity for doing so on Wednesday evening. Mr. Hungeriord, gas engineer, obtained leave to be represented by counsel. The Mayor, Mr McDonald. was granted leave to adduce evidence, and to examine witnesses. The inquiry will be commenced formally next Monday evening. The committee agreed to requisition the council for ■GO expenses, having engaged a shorthand reporter.
