A Wellington man, who has just returned from a- visit to the South Island, says that the Taieri Plain is the only green spot he noticed in the south. (Farmers in Central Otago are having a very had time, having had to send to other districts for feed for their sheep. The outlook for store sheep, it was said by local farmers, had never been so bad. The country was so dry in Canterbury that farmers had been compelled to plough up the grass land abutting on the railway line, in order to safeguard their crops against possible fire, which might be induced by sparks from railway engines.
