A cablegram''from Melbourne states that Mr. Broome, mining engineer at Westport, dia-s been. appointed manager of the State coal mine at Powlett’s River, at a salary of £IOOO a. year. The death is announced of Captain John Mowlem, J.P.. late coroner for the Palmerston North district, aged 70. Over fifty members of tlie Wellington Law Society assembled at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to say farewell to Dr. McArthur, S.M., who leaves on Thursday*on a health-recruit-ing trip to England. Mr. Herdman, president of the Society, said the Bar had always entertained the greatest respect for Dr. McArthur. The wonder was that he had managed to get through the enormous amount of work thrust on him up to three years ago, when a second Magistrate was appointed. The strenuous labors then probably bad a good deal to do with tbo breakdown in health. He wished Dr. McArthur, on behalf of the Bar, an enjoyable trip, and hoped be would return in tlie best of health to resume work. Messrs Skerrett and Wilford also p/poke, the latter remarking that Dr. McArthur had frequently put his band into his own pocket to help persons whom he had sentenced. ThtSkloctor, in reply, said it was l the proudest moment of his' life. He was glad liis humble efforts to do his duty liad been appreciated. '
