THE RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.
ALTERATIONS TO BE RE-CON-SIDERED.
In connection with the recent alterations to the railway time-table, and which have caused much inconvenience, the following letter has been received by Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P. for Napier, from Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways:—“l am going into the question of reconsidering the railway time-table as far as the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay provincial districts are concerned. In view of the numerous communications I have received, from various parts of the districts in regard to this matter, I deem it better to visit Napier and meet the people more directly concerned on the spot. With this object in view I propose to arrive in Napier on Monday evening next, and shall be glad if you will arrange for representatives of the Borough Council, the Chamber of Commerce and others to meet me on the Tuesday, so that I may have an authoritative expression in regard to local requirements. Perhaps Gisborne and Hastings would like to combine with Napier in placing their views before me. I desire to endeavor to arrange a service that, will meet as far as .possible the general convenience.” Mr. John Townley, Chairman of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, yesterday received the following telegram Trom Mr. Brown:—“Hon. Millar will be in Napier next Tuesday, February Ist, for the purpose of meeting a deputation re the new railway time-table. Will be pleased if you can have a representative present.” A meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce will, in all probability, be held this morning to consider the question of representations from Gisborne on the subject. The matter was referred to at the meeting of the Borough Council last night by Cr. Pettie, who spoke strongly of the -great inconvenience caused to travellers by the present time-table, and on his motion it was decided, to forward a resolution to Hon. J. A. Millar stating that in the Council’s opinion the present- system is moat unsatisfactory, and that the Council would be glad to see a reversion to the old system as nearly as possible. RESOLUTION OF PALMERSTON NORTH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. __ j ,5 TPnti Ptisss Abhooution.T PALMERSTON N., Jan. 26. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce to-day passed the following resolution in connection with the railway service—“That, as the. i Napier Chamber does not now consider it necessary to have daily communication with New Plymouth, as supplied by the present railway service, this Chamber is prepared to support the new proposal of the Napier Chamber, and to strongly press for an early connection between Masterton and Waipiikurau and Palmerston North, to arrive at Palmerston North not later than 11 a.m.”
