Mr Asquith, the Premier, whilst journeying in a motor car in East Fife, was chased by suffragettes in motor cars, compelling police intervention. A HUGE BUILDING. The largest music hall in Britain is being erected for Walter Gibbons on a site in Henglar’s Circus, Oxford street. The building will seat 5000 persons, and cost £200,000. GERMANY AND AMERICA. ; The “Morning Post's” Washington correspondent states that the real difficulty between America and Germany is not the admission of American meat,but Washington’s demand for the mostfavored nation’s treatment, stating that otherwise the maximum tariff will be enforced against Germany. The latter replied that Germany was willing to grant the favored-nation tariff, provided that America would, by treaty, define the duties payable on German importations. Washington disapproves of a treaty, because its ratification would reopen the tariff question.
STORMS IN ITALY. ROME, Jan. 26. A violent wind, with torrential rain, has been experienced in Italy. Many ships were damaged at Naples, and the telegraph lines were broken. KILLED BY AVALANCHE. BERNE, Jan. 26. An avalanche killed six smugglers at Valmesocco, Switzerland. THE GALLOWS. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 26. Voskrenski, who was sentenced to death for murdering the chief of the detective police, has been hanged.
