LAND FOR SELECTION.

THE TONGOIO SETTLEMENT

Notice is given that the Tongoio settlement of 8411 acres 3 roods, cut up into twelve sections ranging from 287 acres to 983 acres, is open for selection on renewable lease, and that applications will be received at the District Lands Office, Napier, up to Thursday, February 17th. Applicants will have to appear personally before the Land Board at the District Lands Office, Napier, at 10 o’clock a.m., on Friday, the 18th February, 1910, to answer any questions the Land Board may ask, but if the applicant so desires he may be examined by the Land Board of the district in which he resides. The ballot for the sections 1 for which there is more than one applicant will be held on Saturday, the 19th February. 1910, at 10 o’clock a.m., at the District Lands Office, Napier. Preference will be given to landless applicants, and the decision of the Land Board as to which applicants are landless shall be final and conclusive. -i,. .

Tongoio Settlement is situated near the southern end -of Wairoa County on the main; coach road from Napier to Wairoa, the nearest portion being 11 miles from Port Ahuriri and’ 13 miles from Napier. A road is to be formed through the block, leaving the main road at the Te Ngaru ford and joining it again near The Elbow. A bridletrack is also to be made from this road to the Waipatiwi River to meet the present track to Moliaka. The right to use the present formed horse-track is reserved to the public until such time as the new roads are formed and opened. The estate generally consists of good limestone country, intersected by deep gullies carrying good water. A number of the sections have small alluvia] flats of good quality. There is no timber suitable for fencing purposes, the only growth being manuka, ngaio, and other kinds of scrub. Blackberries have spread on to some of the, sections, chiefly on the hillsides facing Te Ngaru and Kotomangengi Streams. Many of the sections are, however, almost free from them. All have been cut within the last two With the help of Angora goats are now well under control. The sections as a whole arc covered with a good sole of grass, hut places (have gone back to native pasture, and require to be re-sown. Rat-tail is found on all. the sections, but principally near the coast. Immediate possession' will be given.
