At the Primitive Methodist Conference at Timaru, when the appointment of a secretary for the Church’s Juvenile Anti-cigarette League was tinder discussion, Mr P. J. Hawkins advocated that ministers and Church workers generally should not smoke, and thereby set an example to the children to follow. This brought the Itev. G. Knowles Smith to liis feet with the remark that he was a smoker and had liis own opinion on the matter. Mr Hawkins, he said, would do well to confine liis remarks to juvenile cigarette smoking.
