PRODUCE MARKET
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 29. Harvest work is still claiming the full attention of farmers throughout the province. It is not surprising that the amount of grain placed on the market so far has been within very narrow limits. ‘Offerings have been confined) to a few lines of wheat and Algerian oats. Scarcely any white oats have yet been on sale. The samples offered during the week have, on the whole, been of a very satisfactory class, although, m some, instances, the grain is very slightly the.result of unfavorable weather conditions during the ripening process, bines last report sales of new season’s grain have "been made up to 3s 9d per bushel on trucks at country stations, but sales at this price have been the exception, not the rule, current prices being 3s 7d to 3s Bd. It is expected tliat the wheat crop will, on the whole, prove rather more satisfactory than oats, but the returns will, in most cases, be below what was anticipated a couple of months ago, when everything pointed to phenomena] yields. With the exception of Algerian oats the market is practically bare, lines placed during last few dare having been exceptionally small. At present there are no miffing oats on the market. Reports continue to come to hand to the effect that the crops thrashed up to the present are turning out unsatisfactory, the returns being much below the estimates. Fair business is being done in potatoes for ship r ment northwards. Generally speaking crops are satisfactory, and up to the present there is no blight. Owing to the scarcity the price of fresh eggs has advanced to Is 2d per dozen.
