GENERAL HEAVY RAIN.

After tho rain of Saturday anti Sunday evenings, yesterday morning broke dully. Later on the sun shone out brilliantly, until about 11.35 p.m.. when an exceptionally heavy shower fell, lasting for over ten minutes. Once again the sun came out and the atmosphere was extremely muggy and warm. In the evening there was another smart shower, and late last night- rain was again threatening.

[Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. Practically continuous rain has been falling since Friday night, the record up to 9 a.m'. this morning being 2.35 inches, the heaviest for a long time. No reports are to hand of any damageon the railways. Thick weather Fas delayed coastal shipping, and work on the wharves has been much impeded.

HEAVY RAINS IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. On Friday afternoon rain, wFicF had for some time previously been intermittent, commenced to descend in a steady downpour, and has continued ever since. Unless it quickly abates it is probable that- serious damage will be done in the country districts. The local observatory records that from Friday about 2.30 p.m. up to 2.30 p.m. today, 2.219 inches of rain Fad fallen.
