MEETING OF BOARD OF GOV-
ERNORS
A meeting of the Board of Governors, of the Gisborne .High School was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs C. A. deLautour (chairman), A. F. Matthews. J. Coleman, E. H. Mann, J. W. Nolan, and W. Morgan (secretary).
A quantity of correspondence was dealt with, amongst vtfiich was a letter from the Education Board conveying the thanks of the Board to the Governors for the care and attention they have given to tlie technical classes while they have had them under their control, and notifying that the Board will take over the control of all technical instruction as far as it refers to school classes, as from January Ist,
The Chairman said that 65 applications had been received to join the school. They had left off with 88, and there were seven known of as leaving. If they counted on thirteen leaving that would leave them with an attendance of 140. He further stated that the school site and mil the reserves for which they had been drawing rent for so long were now vested in the Board. On the question of seating accommodation for the children, the Chairman said that a certain pattern had been recommended by tlie Government. Th e secretary had obtained a quotation for desks at 15s lOd each, and a sample bad been forwarded from th e manufacturer.'
.ft was decided tlint after conferring with the headmaster on the question of single or dim] desks, the rcerciyu-v be instructed to place an order for the number of desks required. Some discussion took place regardin'* the appointment of an additional teacher at the school, and it was finally decided that Mr. Cornish, of Kaitan-gat-a, Otago, be offered a six-month appointment. The reason for a time being specified is that Mr. Cornish is one ol the nominees for a Rhodes scholarship, and should he be selected, he will have to leave in July next. Ho is raid to be a particularlv clever young man, 22 years of age. He gained a University scholarship in 1905 and was a student for a year at the Otago Training College. Holding a 13. A. degree, Mr. Cornish will shortly i I,\ " s examination, and should he be able to accept the Board’s ofier, he will join the teaching staff at once.
