H.M.S. PEGASUS.
VISIl 1 TO GISBORNE
Early yesterday morning H.M.S. Pegasus arrived in the bay, and took up the usual Government anchorage. The Pegasus left Auckland on Monday evening last, and came down the coast at easy steaming to carry out gunpractice. Owing to the heavy weather this was interfered with considerably. Mr. John Town ley. Chairman of the Gisborne Harbor Board, and Captain Gumming, harbormaster, went out to the warship about 8 o'clock yesterday morning, and a formal welcome was tendered to the commander and officers.
H.M.S. Pegasus is a twin-screw, third-class protected cruiser, of 2135 tons, and 5000 horse-power. She carries eight guns, and has a speed of 20 knots. Her full complement of officers and men is 220, but she now only has about 210 on board. The officers are: Commander A. H. Home, Lieutenants E. H. Boughey, R. Bacchus, Hazelwood, C. F. Lowe. N. C. Wes tall. En-gineer-Commander V. doParis, Engi-neer-Lieutenant R. Symmonds, FleetPaymaster W. H. Stevens, Surgeon N. W. Cummings. Yesterday afternoon the ship was open for inspection, and the U.S.S. Co. ran four excursions by the Tuatea, kindlv donating the proceeds to the Maternity Home. There were about 500 people, mostly women and children, taken out to the warship, and these had a most pleasant outing, the weather being beautiful.
Commander Home was on shore, at the invitation of Mr. Townley, and he was taken for a motor drive. A large number of officers and men also had shore leave vesterdav.
No excursions will be run to the boat to-day. The forenoon will be devoted to general drill on board, and during the day shore leave will be granted to the men. who, however, will all have to be on board by 11 p.m. The Pegasus leaves for Napier at daylight to-mor-row morning.
