FEARS OF GENERAL STRIKE

The South Wales masters claim damages for refusal to work an extra sixty hours, aggregating £3OO,(JUU sterling. The colliers retaliated by claiming payment for short coal, for which the existing agreement does not enforce payment. The miners iu 'Northumberland continue to fiercely oppose three shifts. It is expected that the Northumberland ballot next week ■will order a strike. Mr Burt reports the situation to be grave, and that there is great risk of a general strike, •which, jbe deprecates.
