GISBORNE RACING CLUB. SUMMER MEETINGPresident, Hon. Jas. Carroll; vice-pre-sident, Mr.. D. Hepburn; lion, treasurer, Mr. C. J. Bennett; hon. surgeon, Dr. F. Scott; stewards, Messrs C. 3. Bennett, J. Sisterson, F. J. Lysnar, T. McConnell, J. H. Martin, D. J. Barry, G. R. Wyllie; judge, Hon. Cant. Tucker; starter, Mr. A. Wood; handicapper, Mr. J. Chadwick; totalisator steward, Mr. W. O. Sheet; clerk of scales, Mr. J. E. Whitby; clerk of course, Mr. A. Pritchard; secretary, Mr. H. E. Dodd. ;

Ideal weather favored the opening day of the summer meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club, at the Park racecourse yesterday. There was a large attendance, including many ladies, and the scene on the lawn was a most animated one, many pretty toilettes being in. evidence. The racing was most interesting, the presence of several outside horses adding to its attractiveness. The course was in splendid condition, and some very fast times were recorded. The starting was, on the whole, good, and one or two close finishes bore testimony to excellent handicapping. A feature of the meeting was the smoothness of the general arrangements, which were in the hands of the secretary (Mr. 11. E. Dodd), and the several events were got off well to time. In the capacity of judge, Mr. W. G. Sherratt’s decisions were unquestioned, and the proceedings throughout wore enlivened by the presence of the Gisborne City Band, which rendered a programme of attractive music from the lawn. A fairly good luncheon was provided by the Gisborne Co-operative Bakery Co.. Ltd. An innovation in this department was made, by which patrons of the diningroom were compelled to pay for their lunch before entering the room, and the new arrangement came in for some most unfavorable criticism. Ten bookmakers were licensed at a fee of £ls 10s each, and the totalisator receipts showed an increase of £lOl6, the figures being £4362, as against £3346 for the corresponding day last year. The following are the details of the racing:
