The following have been selected to represent Otago at the amateur championship meeting at Auckland: McFarlane, putting the AA r eight and hammer throAving; Mitchell, high and long jump; Reid, 100, 200, and 440 yards; Beatson, mile 1 and three miles; Morrison, mile and three mile Avalk.
220 YARDS WORLD’S RECORD
At Stoke-on-Trent, on Saturday, December 18, Nat. J. Cartmell, the ex-American amateur, and A. B. Postle, of Australia, met to contest the 200 yards, professional championship: of the AA’orld. A close race Avas expected, but' Cartmell won by three yards, breaking, the professional record for tlie distance. His time Avas 21 £ seconds —a A 7 ery remarkable performance considering the atmospheric and general conditions, snow falling at the time. Postle. led at half-distance, but then Cartmell went right aivay with a magnificent burst. Tavo amateurs liai'e beaten Cartmell’s time. In 1896 B. ,J. Wafers did 21 1-5 seconds, at New York, and in 1909 Robert Kerr, the Canadian sprinter, did 21 2-5 seconds at Hamilton. About 5000 people were present.
