A SUCCESSFUL IXSTITUTKKS

[Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON N.. Feb.. 7T.. At the annual meeting, of the High School Board to-night, it. was reported that the roll number was now ISI, the highest number yet at the school. The report of the chairman, Mr. W. Rutherford, was that the. school,was now in an admirable position, financially and otherwise. The report continued:— “This gratifying position: is mainly-due to the wise provision made by the Education Department by which adequate funds are now. provided, tor unendowed secondary schools such as the one now under our control.” Tli© report also dealt with the very great progress made b'v the technical; school during the year, during which fine new school buildings.were- erected and fully occupied, by voluntary contributions and Government grants and subsidy, at a total cost for land,, buildings, fittings, etc., of £7755, of which the Government: provided £dq9S~ The roll of individual students had increased from 315 in 1909. The increase is expected to be still greater on resuming this year. Mr,. W. Rutherford, who has been most successful in the management of the Board’s affairs, and to whose personal’ efforts the commencement of the now school buildings was mainly due, declined re-election as chairman, owing to pressure of business, and the treasurer, Mr. Collingwood Clark, was-elect-ed' in: his place. The Rev. J. Jolly resigned in view of going to< Pons-onby. It was resolved on Mr. Rutherford’s motion to make, the Technical School Committee representative of the High School Board, the local bodies, the ; Chamber of Commerce, and the trades unions, and that it- be given greater powers, the present High School’ Board to continue to act till the new scheme is given effect to.
