A SATISFACTORY INCREASE. The /following is a' return of the estimated population of the Dominion on December 31st, ISO 9, compiled by the Registrar-General and contained in last week’s Government “Gazette.”

Estimated Population, 1909 520,403 462,520 982,923 (Exclusive of Maoris.) T)he Maori population, according to the 1906 census, is 47,731, and of the Cook, and other Pacific Islands, annexed in 1901, 12,340. The addition of these figures thus make the total estimated population of the Dominion on December 31st., 1909, to he as follows: Males 552.163 'females 490,829. Total: 1,042,994. Chinese arc included in the .population given above. The number in the Dominion on December 31st., 1909, was estimated to be 2,824, of -whom 67 were females. Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 22,281, or at the rate of 2.32 per cent, during the year. To this increase excess of births deaths contributed 17.562, and excess of arrivals over departures 4.719. The birth rate for the Dominion in 1909 was 27.29 per 1000 of the mean population and the death rate 9.22, as against 27.45 and 9.57 respectively in 190 S. The deaths in 1909 (8962) were less than, the number registered in 1908 (9.043) by 8.1, and the rate per 1000 fell from 9.57 to 9.22, which is the lowest rate recorded since. 1897. The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1909, is estimated at- 8.181, giving a rate of 8.42 per 1000 of the mean population, against 5,339 and 8.82, the actual number and rate in 1908. The following table shows the fluctuations in the birth, death and marriage rates during the past ten years. The rate quoted in each instance is per 1000 of population:—
