MATAWHERO STOCK SALES
The usual weekly sale of stock was held at the Matawhero yards yesterday. There was a very large attendance, and the entry was exceptionally large, 34,000 sheep in all being put up for sale, and about 450 head of Uattle. The entry included 9000 owes from Mr. S. Williamson’s Ngatapa estate, and these brought good prices, almost the whole entry being disposed of. There were also large entries from Messrs R. Murphy’s, K. S. Williams’, ■Loisel’s, H. deLautour’s, and other stations, and as buyers had attended from great distances in order to secure stock, the bidding was brisk, and the prices good. The entry of sheep consisted mostly of ewes, there only being a small offering of wethers and lambs. A. good entry of rams were bought toward, but these did not meet with any great demand. CANTERBURY HARVEST PROS-
PECTS.
TPfu Press Association. I CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 9. During the week there has been a great change in the weather condi-
tions, persistent rain giving way to warm sunshine and drying winds, the result being that the grain in'stook dried rapidly and the work of gathering has continued without intermission. The condition of the grain is reported to have improved greatly since the rain, and now it is not anticipated that the damage will be as widespread as was at one time feared. A Considerable amount of work has vet to be done, with with another fortnight’s favorable weather there will hoi? be a great amount of .stuff left ungathered in the northern portion of the province. The amount of grain placed on offer during the last week has. been comparatively small, but for offerings there has been a ready sale, samples in sound condition commanding good competition at prices ranging from 4s to 4s Id on trucks at couhtry stations. These prices are not fixed on English values, but on local requirements, and it is fair to assume they will be maintained only as long as that demand exists. The farmers have been ready sellers, being dubious as to the condition of the grain, which was not coming forward in large quantities. The samples shown during the week have been fairly good in quality, not having been damaged gy the weather to nearly the .extent anticipated some time ago. Many crops threshed have yielded an unsatisfactory return per acre, being disappointingly low. while samples have invariblv been light.
