CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held last night. His Worship the Mayor pro-, sided, and there were also present Messrs John Maynard, G. Darton, J. Somervell, F. Harris, and W. Pe-ttie.. Several applications for relief were received and considered. In some cases the requests were granted, and in another the application was referred ’to the Visiting Committee with power to act. In the case of a man making application for admission to the hospital, it was resolved to suggest that h e enter the Old Men’s Home.

The secretary read a. circular from Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, sent to the various institutions which come under the new Act on April Ist, pointing out that the election will be held on Wednesday, March 16th. and stating that, in framing regulations with regard to the appointment of representatives, he has, as far as possible, allowed for the same number of members as with boards under ■fclio old law, except where the boards have been comprised of all the members of a County Council or Borough Council, which makes a large and unwieldy Board. He would rather see a small than a large Board, for example,' a Board of eight or twelve. Tlie Act. however, provides that a< Board shall consist of not less than eight, nor more than 20 members. Dr. Valintine added: “I, therefore, propose to apportion the local bodies in your district so that the Board will consist of 16 persons. Before 'definitely deciding thereon, however. I would like to have the opin_ ion of your Board. As I want to bring the regulations out as soon as possible, T would he glad to have your opinion at the earliest possible dated’.

Some discussion took place regarding the formation of the Hoard, Mr Darton mentioning that the. borough, on the basis of population, would bo entitled to perhaps foui; representatives. The Mayor favored the Board- consisting of’ 15 members, and that the borough shofild have not less than onethird of the representatives. Messrs Pettie and Somervell considered that proportion of representation too !o-.v, and urged that half the representatives should.bo from the borough.

It was finally decided that a proportion of two-fifths be requested for the borough. The custodian of the Old Men’s Home reported as follows: in the Homo at last meeting 14, men 13, women 1; since died, 1; number at present in Home 13, 12 men and 1 woman; general health of inmates good.. On behalf of the Visiting Committee it was reported that matters at the Home wer 0 progressing very satisfactorily. Dr. Collins and Mr. A. F. Matthews were appointed the Visiting Committeefor the ensuing month, and accounts for nayment amounting to £lO4 were passed.
