BRITISH LADS FOR VICTORIAN TRAINING FARMS.

LONDON, Feb. 9
Sir J. W. Taverner, Agent-General for Victoria, has chosen a dozen respectable lads from the nominations of the Stratford emigration office for a year’s training on Victorian farms. Their ages range from 16 to 18 years. They are chiefly shop boys and factory hands.
NEW SOUTH WALES PRISON STATISTICS.
SYDNEY, Feb. 9
The Prisons Department report shows that the prison population at the end of last year totalled 1430, compared with 1500 at the end of the previous year. The expenditure was £88,397, compared with £129,059 in 1895.
JAPANESE WARSHIPS TO VISIT AUSTRALIA.
The Japanese cruisers Soya and Aso, formerly the Russian cruisers Varyag and Bayan, will visit Australia next month on a training cruise for cadets.

AN ITALIAN MURDERER HANGED.
PERTH, Feb. 10.
Robustelli, an Italian. has been hanged for the murder of a compatriot named Forsatti at C-oolgardie on October 19. Death was instantaneous.
