THE TURF.
POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club was commenced yesterday. The weather was all that could he desired, perhaps a trifle hot, and a fairly largo number of people journeyed out to the. Makaraka course. The track was in splendid order, .and the racing was most interesting, the majoritv of the events being closely contested, while in one or two instances the finishes were most exciting. The details were, as usual, attended to in a thorough manner by Mr. D. R. Costa, and no hitch occurred to mar thp proceedings. Messrs Vita Bros.’ orchestra was present, and rendered an enjoyable programme of high-class music, and the catering was in the hands of the Gisborne Co-operative Bakery Co.. Ltd. During the day the sum of £SBOO was put through the totalisator. as against £6357 for the corresponding day of last year’s meeting, and there were; nine liookmakers present. Mr. W. G. Sherratt capably filled the position of judge. The following are the details of the racing:—

Captain Jingle showed the way from Denzel, with Baldos third and Continuance next, with the others bunched. Along the back Baldos ran un level, and Amato was also to be seen improving his position. Baldos led into the straight, but Amato came fast, and passed him inside the distance, winning bv a length. Three lengths separated Baldos and Captain Jingle, and Donzel finished fourth. Time, lmin 43 3-osec. FIRST HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 60 sovs., second horse 10 sovs. One and three-quarter miles. Over seven flights of hurdles. W. S. This position was maintained until the .stand was passed, and along the back stretch. Rounding the bend into the straight Reservoir moved up, and entered the straight abreast of Te Kainui. Approaching the last hurdle, Reservoir made his effort-, and, finishing well, won by four lengths, with Tvrannio half a dozen lengths away third. Time, 3min 3Q?see.

—Also started: Spate S.lO. Hirini 5.2, The Chef 7.2, and Waimaori 7.0. Waimaori got the worst of the start, and Hirini showed out- in front from The Chef and Spate, with Auldearn and Eiya. next in that order. Then came Fort William, with Waimaori last. Hirini led until the entrance t-o the straight- was reached, when Auldearn shot through on the rails and Eiya also put in a great race. Just outside the distance Fort William started to come fast, but although passing Eiya failed to reach Auldearn, who won by a neck after a snlendid finish. Eiya was a goed third, half a length away. The two light-weights led the field at a merry pace for six furlongs, with Iranui lying handy, third, Lamsdorff fourth, Chanteuse fifth, and Paisano last. At the end the field bunched, aha entered the straight together. Iranui looked a likely winner, but was challenged by Lamsdorff and Chanteuse, the former of whom, on the rails, won a good race by half-a-length. Chanteuse was two lengths behind the Soult mare, third. Time, 2min S 4-ssec.

From a good start Manupai led from Reformist. Lord Possible, and Masonic, with the others together. Entering the straight Lord Possible forged to the front, and won very easily by two lengths. A length separated .Manupai from Masonic, Ramuira was fourth, and The Drummer last. Time, oOsec. TELEPHONE HANDICAP, of TOsovs; second horse lOsovs. Five furlongs. W. H. The Squatter showed the way out of the barrier from Ardfert, Continuance, Donzel, and Baldos, with Dan Leno bringing up the rear. Along the back Baldos improved his position, and Ardfert dropped back. The Squatter led by a ejear length into the straight, and at the distance was loudly proclaimed the winner. Baldos, however, came fast on the rails, and finishing resolutely, under the whip, beat the chestnut by three parts of a length. Dan Leno made up a lot of ground in the later stges of the race, aud finished a fair third. Time, lmin 43sec. FLYING HANDICAP, of 85sovs; second horse lOsovs. Six furlongs: AV. S. Davidson’s ch f Dazzling, by Sir _ Lancelot —Dazzle, 7.0 (L. Wilson) 1 C. J. Parker’s b c Fort William, by Soult —Siminia, 7.0 and 31b over (Lambess) 2 M. When the field settled down after a good start, Fort William took up the running from Rarata, and Dazzling, Lady Roliina, and Truganini followed in that order. Lady Rohina shot to the front at the bend and established a lead of two lengths at the bend. When heads were turned for home, Dazzling showed out, and Truganini came up on the outside. At the distance Dazzling was just in the lead, and just lasted long enough to beat Fort William by a short head. NEW ZEALAND HORSES IN SYDNEY. United Press Association —Copyright SYDNEY, Feb. 10. Downfall, who sustained a bruised, forefoot before leaving New Zealand, has had a portion of the affected part removed, and seems none the worse for the operation. Bobrikoff at present goes as if sore.
