The ill wind arising from the Newcastle coal strike appears to have blown the proverbial portion of good in the direction of creating a demand at Auckland for coal to.fill the bunkers of oversea vessels (says the ‘ ‘New Zealand Herald”)- Further, it is anticipated that permanent contracts will be entered info now that opportunity has arisen to test the suitability of local coal for tflie purpose. During the past week or two the Northern Coal Company has coaled the Inga, British Mon. arch, CaldCr Grove, Celtic King, and other ocean-going vessels, in addition to the unusuallv large number of coastal steamers. The fact that the engineers of some "df these vessels have expressed entire satisfaction with. _ the quality of the Northern .coal, indicates possibilities of/a? decided expansion of the industry in this connection.
