SITTINGS AT AUCKLAND

In the Supreme Court to-day, George Collop Peron-ne, charged with stealing £2l, the property of Thomas- P. Gray, at Ivaukapakapa, was found not guilty, and discharged. John Bell, 75 years of age, an inmate of tho Old Men’s Home at Tararu, Thames, was charged with having assaulted AVm. Burke, so as to do him actual bodily harm. The jury, after a short retirement, brought in a verdict of not guilty, on the ground of insanity at the time the offence was’ committed. His Honor ordered the prisoner to be kept in strict custody in the Avondale Asylum during the pleasure of the Afinister of Internal Affairs. Henry Hammond was found guilty of opening a letter without authority, and Horace AVilson was found guilty of assaulting little girls at Port Albert. His Honor deferred sentence till to-morrow.
SITTING’S AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
PALMERSTON N.. Feb. 11
The Palmerston North sittings of the Supreme Court commenced to-dav before Air. Justice Chanman. True bills were found in the following cases: Rex v. Thomas Powell and E. J. Lower, both for alleged supplying of illegal instruments; Frederick Gillett, alleged indecent assault; Claud Ilether. .allege.-] perjury ; AAk Riley and C. Cannon, alleged breaking and entering: Roland Hayes and William Smith, alleged per_ jury; A. Muir, alleged theft: C. Rather, alleged assault and' robbery; A. Connollv, alleged indecent assault: Boranoff. alleged attempted carnal knowledge ; Pearso, alleged theft. Edward John Lower, charged with supplying illegal instruments, was found not guilty.
A Queensland correspondent writes: Immigrants are coming into the country at the- rate of about 500 a month, with small batches of settlers from diiferent parts of the world. Railways are being rapidly pushed out, settlement is going forward at an accelerated speed, there is every 'prospect of a large sugar crop, and in the pastoral districts the chief anxiety ‘ : s how to dispose of the herds and flocks which are increasing so rapidly.
