THE FIRE SUBDUED
(Received February 11, 10.20 p.m.)
The fire on the barque Penrhyn Castle has been subdued. A large quantity of general cargo was damaged.
The fire started in the foreliold, among a quantity of pottery and other cargo loosely packed in straw. It quickly gained such headway that ’t wa s decided to tow the Penrhyn Castle to Rose Bay and beach her. A steamer started to tow her. In the meantime holes were cut in the decks and the firefloat Pluvius arrived and so effectively poured in water that by Die time the tow had reached Shark Island the fire was checked. The barque anchored, and the firemen soon mastered the outbreak. There is a large quantity of water in the holds. The fell extent of the damage by fire and waterwill not be known until the vessel h pumped out and the damaged cargo discharged. -(Received February 11, 11.40 p.m.) The Penrhyn Castle’s damage is chiefly confined to the ’tween decks and lower hold. Much of the cargo is saturated, and there are two feet of water in the bold.
