TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING

A meeting of the Trades and Labor Council was held on Saturday evening in Townley’s Hall, the president, Mr. W Duncan, in the chair. A circular sent, by Mr. D. McLaren, M.P., recommending the Council to immediately resolve itself into a district branch of the New Zealand Federation of Labor, was considered, and it was resolved that the matter be referred tlirough the delegates to the respective unions for approval. Correspondence from the New Zealand Executive asking for information, suggestions, etc., to effectively have New Zealand manufactures branded as such, in order to protect the Dominion’s industries and safeguard the public. It was thought most advisable to leave the matter in the hands of the organised bodies in the industries more directly concerned. Reports were received from the deputation appointed re the Co-operative Bakery, It was regretted that the Civil Servants’ and Citizens’ Bakory had been compelled to liquidate, and it was resolved to ask all unions for assistance and !to relieve the directors who had taken upon themselves- extraordinary financial responsibilities to further the principles of true co-opera, non. . Mr. J. 11. Hall was unanimously elected to represent the Council at the annual conference to he held in Auckland in Easter week. Some discussion arose as to the advisability of contesting the Hospital and Cuaritable Aid Board election, when it was resolved that the Council on certain conditions should nominate two candidates. Messrs Jackson, Duncan, Peterson, and Hall were nominated. A ballot being taken resulted in Messrs T. Jackson and J. 11. Hall being appointed as the candidates. It wag resolved that the whole Council form itself into an election committee. Mr. Jackson suggested that the Council should take action to conduct a propaganda for their future welfare in contesting all the ©lections. The matter was deferred to the next meeting for special consideration. It wag resolved to refer to the affiliated unions the advisability of securing a site for the erection of a Trades Hall.
