AUCKLAND, Feb. 14

Several members of the Auckland Builders' Association have left for Wellington to attend the conference with the members of the Architects’ Institute on Wednesday, on the subject of conditions of contract, which have been found to work very well in Auckland. except in minor matters, so far as the builders are concerned.

A VALEDICTORY PRESENTATION

PALMERSTON N., Feb. 14. The Rev. I. Jolly, M.A., who has accepted a call to St. Stephen’s, Ponsonbv. was to-night tendered a social by the congregation of St. Andrew’s Church, and presented with a gold watch and other giffs.

SLY GROG SELLERS FINED

As a sequel to a police raid in the prohibition district of Ngahauranga, James Steele was to-day fined £2O and costs for keeping liquor for sale. AYilliam Anderson, a cattle drover, was fined a similar amount.

A TWO-UP SCHOOL PUNISHED. Eight men were to-day fined £3 for playing t\vo-U(p in a public place. Two others, similarly charged, were fined £4, as they had been previously convicted.

TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES IN TROUBLE. A tramway motorman and a conductor were convicted to-day of stealing a purse and contents of a value, of £ll. The Magistrate, Mr. Riddell, remarked that lie thought the ends of justice would be met. taking into consideration the fact that accused had made restitution as far as possible, if they were merely ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. He added that he hoped that neither would again appear in Court.

MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS. 'J'he Hon. J. A. Millar. Minister of Railways, left to-night for Dunedin, where ho will star at least a fortnight. Mr. Millar’,s? trip to Australia will commence on March 18. Sir Joseph Ward wap also a passenger for the South tonight.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND MISSION

GREYMOUTH, Feb. 14. The Rev. H. S. Wollcombe addressed large audiences of men yesterday afternoon. The speech was remarkable for ability. The result will take the form of the establishment of a branch of the Church of England’s Men’s Society in Grey mouth.

FINES ON OPIUM SMOKERS. One Chinaman has been fined. £25 and two others £3 for keeping opium and also for smoking it.

CHRISTOHUROH, Feb. 14. A case which is expected to prov© of considerable interest will, be heard in the Magistrate’s Court on the 23rd inst.. when a well-known local Maori and his wife will be charged with practising tohungaism.

CHRISTCHURCH ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL.

The total expenditure on the Christchurch Roman Catholic Cathedral to date is £65,000. Christchurch raised £20,500, parishes outside the city £15,600, clergy of the district £1955, foreign contributions £4BOO, and since tho cathedral was opened subscriptions have reduced the liability to £13.000.
