A NATIVE’S CRUELTY.
HORRIBLE TREATMENT OE COWS
At AA’airoa, on Saturday evening, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Mr. AAV A. Barton, S.M., took evidence in a case in which a young native about 28 to 30 years of age, was charged with cruelty to three cows. The accused pleaded guilty. Another native, a dairyman from the the Tahanui district, stated that lie had employed the accused to milk his cows, but .he had to discharge him, on account of his dirty habits. Shortly afterwards lie found three of liis cows sick, and accused admitted having inserted matches in the teats of the cows, and then withdrawn them when the phosphorus ivas dissolved. Subsequently one of the cows died, .and the other two were still very sick. Another witness stated that he had met the accused at a dairy factory, about 12 months ago, when accused told him, if he ever wanted to get even with the boss, to put match heads in the cow’s teats. Accused said he did this to increase the milk flow. His AVorsliip /thought the offoncto was too serious to admit of a fine being inflicted, so sentenced accused to three months imprisonment with hard labor, in the Napier, goal.
