VESSELS IN PORT. Fairburn, a.s. Messrs Richardson and Co.’s Weka ,drived from Napier yesterday morning with a general cargo, and returned in the evening, taking a number of sheep.

The auxiliary schooner Fairburn left or-Hy yesterday morning for Pakarae, and’returned last night, with 200 bales of wool. She leaves to-day for Pore Av-'amii, Turanga, and Auckland.

The U.S.S. Co.’s Monowai arrives from South this morning, and leaves later for Auckland. The Tuatea goes out on arrival and a,gain at 7 p.m. Th Ivaiapoi Shipping Co.’s Kairal.vi was to leave Napier at 6 p.m. last evening, and is due this morning. She loads sheep for Pigeon Bay. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s jvlamari is due from South on Friday for Home loading. Messrs Common, (Shelton and Co. advise that the s.s. Tainui arrived at Hobart at 9 a.m. yesterday. The U.S.S.* Co.’s Wan aka arrivin' from. South at 10 o’clock last even or and sailed again about 2 a.m. for Coast bays and Auckland.

The New Zealand Shipping Com-, p.-.ny’s Whakatane is due early this morning from Auckland. The U.S.S. Co.’s Wanaka is expected to load at Bluff on February 28. Oamaru March 1, Timaru March 2, and should arrive at Gisborne about March 5. An interesting development in ship’s ■plates has been recently patented hy Mr. S. C. Berg, San Francisco, Cal. In this invention the composite plates are made of steel and copper, the process consisting in covering the surface of the steel plate with a suitable fluxing material to prevent oxidisation at a (high temperature, then laying thereover copper, or copper alloy of suitlablo thickness, then passing through the adjoining surfaces electrical current for a sufficient length of time to cause the surfaces to intimately co-mingle.
