MATAAYHERO STOCK SALES

The weekly sale took place at the Matawhero yards yesterday. The weather was wet and the attendance small, so that in the early stages of the sale the lots were hard to quit. A good number of pens of store sheep,-offered early, were passed in, but in most eases these, were satisfactorily disposed of during the day. SHEEP.

There was a good yarding of 12,600 sheep, and although the prices were not high, sellers were satisfied in most cases to lot their lots go. Although a lot of the sheep were in good condition, only a small quantity of fat- sheep were brought forward and these were sold, 53 fat ewes 7s Sd and 30 at Ss 3d. Store sheep sold considerably under the prices realised last wee'k, the buyers evidently having stocked heavily from the big sale. The best price was realised for a good-sized pen of nice 2-tooth ewes, they bringing 13s, while other pens brought Ss 3d. 9s 3d, 9s 60. and 10s 9d. 'Wethers sold at- 9s and 10s 9d, and woolly lambs fetched up to 6s 3d. The sales under the hammer of store sheep were as follows: —34 wethers 10s 9d, 129 lambs 2s 3d, 81 4, G, and 8tooth ewes 5s 3d, 120 woolly lambs 6s 3d, 96 2-tooth wethers 7s Id, S2 2-tooth ewes 6s, 74 2 and 4-tooth wethers 10s 2d, 85 2 and 4-tooth ewes 10s 9d, 115 full-mouthed owes 6s 4d, 216 6-year-old ewes 4s, 384 2-tooth wethers 9s Od. 100 5- owes ss, 150 cull lambs 2s 3(1, 292 2 and 4-tootli wethers 8s 9d 287 ewes os, 419 2-tooth wethers 9s 3d, 101 4-tooth owes 10s. 97 lambs 2s, 23 woolly lambs 6s, 46 6-year-old Romney ewes 6s, 123 mixed age owes 3s 2d, 150 lambs 2s Id, 330 Romney ewes (mixed ages) os Id, 100 2-tootlx ewes 10s, 86 2-tooth ewes 6s, 76 fat and forward wethers 10s, 97 6 and 8-tooth ewes 8s 9d. 271 early shorn 6-year-old owes 7s, 606 6-year-old Romney cross ewes 7s, 150 forward ewes 4s. 44 low conditioned ewes 2s 6d, 4S owes os. 200 2-tooth owes 13s, 29 ewes 2s 7d, 166 6 and 8-tooth owes 6s 10d, 129 ewes 2s 6(1, 223 owes (2-tooth and upwards) 6.s Id, 291 owes (mixed ages) 4s sd, 296 fullmouthed ewes 4s 9d, 97 2-tooth wethers 9s, 26 ewes 7s, .8 mixed sheep 6s, 30 aged ewes 6s 7d., 434 5-year-old owes Ss" 70. 216 big frame ewes 6s Bd. 48 ewes ss, 63 owes (mixed ages) 4s Id. - There was also a good number of rams put up for sale. Bidding for these was very slow, in most cases the reserve not being reached. A good number were sold, however, and most of the passed-in lots were disposed of privately. Romneys sold at host prices. The sales were:—3 Romneys lgn, 30 Romneys 3§gns, 1 4-tooth Lincoln 1 Romney os, 6 full-mouthed Southdowns -Ign, 3 full-mouthed LeicesterLincolns ign, 30 Lincolns 3gns, 6 rams ss, 6 English Loicesters 4gns. 14 Border Leicesters 11s, 5 full-mouther,) Leicesters -Jgn, 10 Romneys 2£-gns, 5 6- Romneys 2;(gns, 7 6 and 8tooth Romneys 2’gns, 8 3 and-4-year-old Romneys 2!, gns, 7 full-mouthed Romneys IJgns, 5 Romneys ss, 8 Romneys and Leicesters 2s 6d.

CATTLE. There was only a small yarding of about 55 head on offer, and with the exception of one or two fat lots, all were satisfactorily dsposed, of. The prices were: 1 fat cow £3 6s, 1 at £3 10a. 3 fat heifers at £3 15s, 6 fat-cows £3 15s. Store cattle all sold as' fol-. lows: 9 bullocks £5 ss, 6 steers £3 15s, 4 cows £3, 1 cow £1 10s, 8 calves 17s 6d. , PIGS. About 18 pigs were yarded, and the sale, under the hammer was confined to one porker at 27s and four weariers at 9s. Other lots were disposed of privately.

THE CANTERBURY HARVEST

The continued fine weather has greatly improved the condition of the grain, and a week or ten daysi will see the Canterbury crops safely gathered in. To-day is dull with ram threatening, but if the rain hoids off stook thrashing will be finished in a few days. Wheat prices have weakened owing to local (requirements being filled. A few parcels have sold at 3s lid, but that is the outside price, and prime is quoted at 3s 9d to 3s lid. About 3s 6d is offered for export lines, but there are few sellers. The best recent sale was made yesterday, 13,000 bushels changing hands' at 3s lOd f.o.b. Tho oat samples are thin, and yields are bo_

low expectations. 3000 bushels of grade A., Cartons, sold at Is 9d, and 100 bushels of grade B. at Is Bd. There is a brisk demand for barley at 3s 6d to 4s, and up to 4s 3d for prime sample. Cocksfoot sells freely at 4d to 4Jd.

According to speakers at a meeting of the North Canterbury Executive of the Farmers 5 Union, tho grain yield may reach 28 bushels per acre, but will not get anywhere near the Government’s estimate of 35 bushels.
