CRYSTAL PALACE FESTIVAL
COLONIAL ART. The ‘‘Daily Telegraph 55 contained, recently, an article on colonial art by the Earl of Plymouth, who is interesting himself in the Crystal Palace Festival of Empire. In this article the earl kiaid that special attention was to be devoted at the Festival to an exhibition of the work of living artists from all parts of the Empire, under the auspices of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. Mr. AV. Aycrst Ingram, president of the British Colonial Society of Artists, replied to this, saying that the. announcement was premature. He. continues:—“l heartily endorse what Lord Plymouth says, but I very much fear that to get together a representative collection of what is best in the art of India, the Australasian States, the Dominions of Canada and New Zealand, and the, South African Commonwealth, would take a far greater amount of time than will be at the disposal of the Royal British Colonial Society, should the promotors of the festival eventually agree to the necessary conditions; but an exhibition such as that indicated, i.e., the gathering together (if possible) of works by colonial artists exhibited in Paris in 1900. Glasgow 1901, with the St. Louis and New Zealand exhibits, would, I think, prove an attraction, and would den onstrate that a great future is in store for the art of the Empire beyond the seas.”
