The ft. 3. Fairburn will probably get away this morning for Auckland \ m fort A.vanui and Tauranga. A singular fact in connection with the P. and O. Company’s passenger trade was alluded to by the chair-
man, Sir Thomr* Sutherland, in his sneeeh. at the recent annual meeting of that company. He referred to the great change in the social habit of the passengers in the direction of temperance. “I need hardly tell you,” he said, ‘ that wo carry far more passengers than we carried! ten years ago. You will probably be surprised to hear that, notwithstanding the increased number of passengers, our consumption of ivine, beer, and spirits has fallen in these ton years by 50 per cent.” There were cully two exceptions to that decline, added the chairman. There was an increase in the consumption of mineral waters, and there was an increase in the consumption of Stout, a beverage totalis unknown aboard the ship in the tropics until a few years ago. “We may now, I suppose, rejoice,” said Sir Thomas, “in the change which, has taken! place in the habits of travellers as being of a great interest to the rising generation, who will doubtless escape tin* paternal gout and many other ills teat the flesh is heir to.”
