FALSE PRETENCES.

A young man who gave the name of Sidney Stevenson lias been arrested on a charge of obtaining money bv the sale of mining shares, wiiich he did not possess. It is* alleged that by rep-e----senting himself to be John Burndge, of Nelson, he sold to S. A\ bite and Co 500 Alay Queen shares, and received £ll2 9s in cash; that representing himself as H. R. Duncan, or Nelson, he- sold through Alessrs Alo.vbray eleven Match man shares, and asked for a cash pavment of £B9 0s 4d, but me brokers "insisted on paying by cheque. Suspicion then being arousec. payment was stopped. 'When arrested tlie accused had £6O in his possession. His solicitor stated that he would plead guilty, and restitution would be made of the money received by accused. Prisoner was remanded on bail, with two sureties of £-50 each.

AVOODVILLE, Feb. 18. A horrible accident happened to a young man named bred. Kemp, son of .Ur. I‘, . Kemp. at K.umara day afternoon. He was engaged blasting logs in a paddock. He had just finished a charge, and .before the. fuse was fixed an explosion occurred. Kemp was standing on the log at the time, and received the full force of the explosion. His hair was badly singed and his clothes set on fire. He only had enough energy to rush to a swamp and roll into the water, but oeiore he got the fire out he was terribly burned about tbe body. At present he is lying in a neighbor's house (Bryant s) in a very bad way. Kemp has no knowledge how the charge went- off. but it is surmised that he was smoking at the time, and that a spaxit dropped on top of the powder.

THE RUTLAND HOTEL CASES

Joseph DaA'ies and Martin Haines re-appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning in connection Avith the Rutland Hotel fire, alleged to have been caused by them. They Avere remanded eight days, bail being refused. The police stated- that exhaustive inquiries had been made throughout the Dominion, and they did not knotv if they Avould he ready with their case even in eight days.

DESTRUCTION OF NATIVE BUSH

The Chamber of Commerce this morning decided to scud a protest to the Minister at the head of the Tourist Department against the destruction of the bush and fern scenery on the banks of the Wanganui River. It aaus stated that the Maoris and others were cutting down the bush, and not even solving grass, allowing noxious weeds to spread.
