MR. DEAKIX REPLIES TO MR HUGHES.

Speaking at Glen limes, Mr Deakin controverted Mr Hughes’ argument that the main issue of the elections was a progressive land tax. The Commonwealth had sole -power of indirect taxation, but so long as that was sufficient for it s needs, it had no.intention of interfering with the State’s prerogative of direct taxation.
