A BOGUS DETECTIVE.
BLACKMAILS OLD MAN FOR £l4O
(Ter Press Association. | AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. An extraordinary case of false pretences, by which an old man named 'Welsh was duped into parting with sums of money of the total amount of £l4O, was heard before Mr Justice Cooper yesterday. The accused, James Robinson, .pleaded ‘not guilty. - From tlie evidence given for the Crown it appeared that the prisoner pretended to be a detective, and had charged welsh with immoral practices, but offered to let him off in return! for £2O. which lie received. Subsequently with another man lie had again visited Welsh, and saying his friend was in trouble bad borrowed £2O from him. Not satisfied with this lie had returned with his friend again a few days later, and producing a pair of handcuffs said lie had got into trouble and lost his billet through trying to get Welsh out, and that it would take £IOO to clear the matter no. After come persuasion Welsh paid up. Yesterday’s sequel for Robinson was three years’ hard labor.
