SATURDAY’S MATCHES

Tile senior and junior competitions were continued at Victoria Domain ana Taruheru on Saturday afternoon. Tiie weather was line when play started ao 2.45, but a southerly buster sprang up about 4 o’clock, and increased in violence as tihe afternoon wore on. A drizzling rain set in at 4.30, and heavy Black clouds obscured the light and made it .very difficult for the batsmen to get a .proper sight of the ball. Play was abandoned on account of jtlie ram in the iunior game between Y.M.C.A. and Alhambra at 5.30, but .the senior match between United and Wanderers was persevered with until ten minutes to six, when heavy rain drove the players to the shelter of the pavilion, where they were kept prisoners for about lialf-an-hour by the steady downpour. At Taruheru, Y.M.C.A. could only muster four men, and Taruheru gained an easy victory by over an innings. It says very little for the interest taken in its senior team that a club with such a large membership as Y.M.C.A. could only muster four men for a senior match.

SENIOR COMPETITION.

WANDERERS v. UNITED

These teams met for the third time this season at Victoria Domain. Wanderers won the toss and sent United in to bat. A very poor stand was made, and the innings closed for the paltry total of GB. Young, Glennie, McMahon, and Adamson all secured good bowling figures. "Wanderers also gave a weak display with the bat in their first innings, and had to thank Tonics, Young anti McCouncl for taking the score to 114, which gave them a lead of 46 on first hands. Farrell and W. Dods bowled well for the United, the latter securing three wickets for five runs. When rain caused play to be abandoned for the day, United had scored 14 for the loss of one wicket- in their second innings. The following are the scores: UNITED.—Ist Innings. W. Y.M.C.A. v. TARUHERU. This game at Taruheru on (Saturday afternoon was practically a farce. Y.M.C.A. rolled up with four men, and Barker, their captain, instead of forfeiting, pluckily decided to go on with the game. Taruheru, with that true sportsmanlike spirit which they have always displayed, sent out practically the whole of their team (seven -men) to field as substitutes for Y.M.C.A. The town team batted; first, and totalled 58, Miller and -Hunt being responsible for most of -the runs. Taruheru responded with 115, C. Lasker, their captain, giving a hard-hitting display, marred by several chances, for 53. Dillon and Sharpies were the next best contributors. Hunt was the most successful bowler for Y.M.C.A., and he captured two wickets for 4 runs off 12 halls, and should have been tried earlier. The Y.M.C.A. quartette were dismissed for 36 in their second venture, Taruheru thus winning by an innings and 21 runs. Miller, who is batting most consistently of late, played confidently lor 24, which included three fourers and a couple of threes. The following are the scores: Y.M.C.A.—-Ist Innings.
