The ketch Coronation arrived from Vhitianga early yesterday morning. She left her loading port- on Friday criternoon last, and next morning was off White Island. An E.S.E wind then was experienced, and the vessel beat ■round East Cape. From there until arrival variable winds prevailed. The cargo is as follows: 22,000 ft timber for J. Colley, 60 tons pipes, 10 tons co-al, and 8000 ft timber for Clayton Bros., 10 tons coal for Robb Bros., and 5000 ft timber each for G. Smith and Williams and Kettle. Captain Pankow further •reports that the schooner Awanui left V/hitianga the same day as be did, but she fouled with some piles! at a new wharf. The Coronation came up to the wharf at 2 p.m. The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall left yesterday afternoon for Marsden Point, with a full load of sheep. She then proceeds to Auckland. The U.S.S. The first keel plate of the new British battleship Orion, of tli© improved Dreadnought type, which, it is believed, will have a displacement of 23,000 tons and be aimed with 13in. guns as main armament, was laid down at Portsmouth Dockyard on November 29. The vessel -has been ordered to be ready for sea within two years. The “Engineer” (London) thinks that the ships for the new Chinese navy, which are looked for to be built in about four years’ time, will, on account- of propinquity, b© constructed in Japanese yards. In addition to licr own Imperial dockyards, Japan is making rapid advances with private, yards. These have constructed destroyers and torpedo boats, not only for the Imperial Government, but also for Siam, and a large- series of gunboats for the Chinese navy.
