A HITCH IN THE SETTLE AIENT
NEGOTIATIONS
United Press Association —Copyright (Received February 23, 8.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 23.
A hitch has occurred in connection with the Newcastle settlement. When the AVages Board met, Judge Scholes said that lie was sorry to announce that the matter was 'not s cttlecl. Something had arisen, whether serious or not remained to be seen. He. considered it wise that he should again see the proprietors before declaring that the negotiations are off. He would not say anything more at present., rioj- make disclosures that might do more harm than good. A meeting of the proprietors was called for to-morrow whereat he would try to bring about an understanding on one matter only, which stands in the way of a complete settlement. At the proper time all negotiations have been and will be made 'known, especially if they miscarry.
The Court was crowded, and great disappointment was expressed at Judge Sclioles’ announcement of a non-settle-ment of the trouble. (Received February 24, 12.5 a.m.) It is rumored that the hitch in the Newcastle negotiations is caused by the desire of the mine-owners to have the right to refuse to re-engage some engine-drivers and firemen who, they claim, left them in the .lurch when the strike occurred.
