The Premier has received a despatch conferring the King’s police medal on Constable Gates for bravery in arresting a burglar at North Sydney in April last.

CONVERSION

Applications for conversion in connection -with the Now South W ales loan amounted to about £1,200,000, and. cash applications to £2,800,000. The latter received about 50 per cent.
A TASMANIAN MURDER
HOBART, Feb. 23
Berty Langmaid has been sentenced to death for murdering Butt, but was recommended to mercy on account of his youth.
[Two brothers named Langmaid were arrested at Forest on January 10th on a charge of murdering a man named Butt, who disappeared on December 21st. Subsequently he was found in the bush shot through the heart. The evidence at the inquest showed that bad feeling existed between the deceased and one of the Langmaids owing to the latter’s friendship with Butt’s wife.]

The Health Officer’s annual report advises the Women’s .League to turn their attention to cookery and combating the liquor evil, which he largely attributes to bad cooking and monotonous diet driving men to drink.
FRENCH NAVAL SQUADRON TO
VISIT AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY, Feb. 23
Advices have- been received that a French naval squadron, consisting of nve cruisers, will visit the Pacific this year. After calling at Saigon, it visits China, Japan, Hawaii, Vancouver, San Francisco, and other places on the west coast, thence proceeds via Noumea to Sydney. It is expected to reach Australian waters in November,
