TENNIS.
GISBORNE CLUB
A very pleasant afternoon was spent on the Gisborne Tennis Club’s court yesterday, when sixteen ladies took part in a progressive tennis tournament. Five sets were played, and the games lasted from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. In the A grade Mrs. Barlow and Miss Bright tied for first place, and in the play-off Mrs. Barlow secured the first prize, a silver vase, and Miss Bright the second prize, a silver buttonhook. In the B grade Mrs. Roy Crawford, Miss Murray, and Miss N. Davies tied and drew for places. This resulted in Mrs. Crawford taking the first prize, a silver-topped cut glass s cent bottle, and Miss Murray the second nrize,. a silver and mother-of-pearl paper knife. Th© croquet ladies also started a tournament, for which a liandsom© trophy has been presented. This tournament will be continued on Saturday afternoon. Afternoon tea was partaken of at the courts, Mrs. Murray presiding, and was greatly appreciated. Several visitors were also present, and spent- a very enjoyable time.
THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION
MEETING
After considering applications from four manufacturers of tennis balls, testing the samples of balls submitted, and giving due consideration to the opinions received from associations and clubs in New Zealand concerning the merit of tennis balls,-the management committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis association has adopted Ayres’ championship ball for the New Zealand championship meeting of 1910.
