Before Mr. Justice Edwards and a jury, a middle-aged woman named Martha Jane Maxwell* (who on the previous day had been tried on a charge of having used an instrument on a young woman with an illegal object in view, and in whose case the jury failed to agree upon a verdict) was presented for re-trial.
