HARDENING IX IRON AND STEEL

MARKET

It is apparent that- there is likely to be a strong movement in the iron and steel market in the near future. A cablegram has been received from leading iron masters in England by the representatives here to the eiiect tnat iron and steel arc- advancing in price, and orders must only be taken subject to Punctuations within a week. A similar movement- is reported from America and Continental iron and steel mar-l-rot-. It has naturally re-acted on vhe price of copper. SUPPOSED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. IHnrv Kinnear Lawrie, 32 years of ngo. was admitted to the Auckland He. pitnl tn-d-.y suffering from wounds in the throat, supposed to be selfinflicted. The wounds are not serious, however, and he will probably recover. Mr. La wide is a Presbyterian minister and resides in Great South Road, Green Lane.

INTERESTING TO -ACCOUNTANTS

In the Supreme Court in the matter of an appeal by Thomas R-owe George from the determination of the Registration Board under the New Zealand Society of Accountants Act-. 190?, by which the appellant was refused registration, Air. Justice Edwards held that the Court had no power to interfere with the finding of the Board. His Honor said, however, that from the evidence before him it- appeared that appellant had been hardly dealt with, but the Board was an association of experts whom appellant was bound to satisfy as to his efficiency. In this he had apparently failed. Probably hi? only chance of relief was i:i a reasonable amendment of the Act.

At ilie Magistrate’s Court to-day Daniel Higgins was proceeded against on two informations under the Gaming Act relative to street betting. Accused pleaded guilty, and was fined the minimum penalty of £2O.

NOVEL AUTOMATIC FIRE ALARM. WELLINGTON. Feb. 24. A successful trial was made yesterday of a novel automatic fire alarm, the invention of Mr. L. T. Rcicbel, late chief electrician of the Public Works Depart, ment. Among those who witnessed the T“?t was Mr. Ferguson, general manager of the Wellington Gas Comu i-iy: Mr. W . Troup, of th 0 Railway Department: Mr. W. T. Watson, of the Bank of Now Zealand; and representatives of shipping companies and fireinsurance offices. The apparatus is simple. the principle being that of the thermopile, and generates electricity from heat.

FIRE AT KAIAJPOI. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. Two shops at Kaiapoi, owned by 51 r. E. Paruham and occupied by Mr. J. T. Riganee. bootmaker, and Mr. R. N. Engle, photographer, were destroyed bv fire to-night. The building was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union Office. The adjoining shop of Messrs Paruham Bros., butchers, was damaged.

APPEAL ON STREET BETTING CASE. The Supreme Court to-day heard appeals by Peter Grant and Edgar Neate against their conviction in the Magistrate's Court on charges of street betting. The ground of the appeals was that the evidence was insufficient to warrant a conviction. Judgment was reserved.

A TEST CASE

A local grocer was convicted to-day f 'F having sold “Scravnllo Tonic,” a beverage containing 29 per cent of o’cobol, without having been licenser]. It. was not suggested that defendant offended wilfully, and the. case was brought as a test. A fine of 10s was imposed.

BURGLARS AT WORK. ” GORE, Feb. 24. Burglars entered Thomas and Beattie’s drapery establishment between 1 and 3 this morning. A sum of 4s od in money was taken from a till, and 15s wortli of pennv stamps, also £l7 worth, of goods, mostly men’s clothing.
