LORD KITCHENER.
ARRIVAL AT WELLINGTON
[Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Fob. 24. Lord Kitchener arrived from Lyttcl. ton by H.M.vS. Encounter at 9.30 this morning. He landed at the King’s Wharf, where a large crowd assembled. He was met by the Prime Minister and members- oil the Cabinet, the Defence officials, and the Mayor and the City Councillors, and was driven to the Wellington Club, escorted by the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles- The Permanent Artillery formed a guard of honor. A salute of 19 guns was fired from, the Thorndon Esplanade Battery when the Field-Marshal landed. Soon after the arrival Lord Kitchener called on the Governor, who returned the visit. For the remainder of the day Lord Kitchener was engaged in conference with the Government and Defence Council, except that there was a civic reception this afternoon. The Governor entertained Lord Kitchener at the Wellington Club to-night.
RECEPTION BY MAYOR’ OF WELLINGTON.
The Town Hall was packed tins afternoon for the Mayoral reception to the Governor, and many hundreds were unable to obtain admission. Altogether about five thousand persons were present. Lord Kitchener arrived at 4.30 p.m., accompanied by Lord Plunket, Sir Joseph Ward, and others. The Mayor (Dr. Newman) delivered a brief speech of welcome, and was followed by the Governor and Sir Joseph Ward, both of whom referred to the important nature cf Lord Kitchener's visit-. In reply, Lord Kitchener said it was a great satisfaction to him to visit the capital of New Zealand. Wherever he had been in the Dominion he had been impressed by the enthusiasm displayed on the question of maintaining an efficient defence force. He trusted that the measures about to be undertaken by the Government would fulfil the national requirements. No one who visited this country could doubt the deep-seated ’and warm loyalty of its inhabitants.
