THE LABOR PARTY.
AIR. DEAKIN’S BALLARAT
SPEECH
In his Ballarat speech, Air. Deakm made the following reference to the Labor Party: “The Labor Party have differences between, themselves. with us differences are tolerated ; with them differences are. amputated. (Laughter.) Outside of politics they represent the same rarities and types. Inside politics they are obliged to Wear the same suits of the same material, the same pattern, the same size, and the same cut. (Laughter.) We take the liberty of wearing our own ciothes (laughter)—but some of our friends of the" Labor Party make rather odd figures in what are to thorn so me times/ obivously ill-fitting clothes. Ihen again, the Labor Party has two sides, but it is more marked in their case. The one they have inside, the other outside. If you are outside one inch or a mile it is the same. The consequence is labor isolation because oi this. ’ The Labor Party often occupies the cross benches, and lately leit them in a cross tem/per. (Laughter.) At this election, however, there are only two parties, and only one dirking line. (Loud cheers.) Our system requires that, and labor tactics have riveted upon us. With that party there is not a natural and real, but a harrow, median Hi], compulsory, uniformity enforced by their constant knee drill in caucus. (Laughter.) They stand all alike and all apart. The other party yon see with a broad unity, but tlie individualities remain. Independence is inserted for themselves- and their constitutents. We arc a party associated as public men, for party purposes, specific and clear. Beyond that we arc free, and within that we are free also. (Cheers.) AVe are uuited simply on the policy it is my duty to outline this evening.”
