CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting ox the Executive of the Chmaber of Commerce has held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present: Alessrs A. S. Wachs-maun, T. Corson, T. E. Toneycliffe, J. R. Redstone, E. AY. Burton, J, B. Kells, I. Simson, and AY. D. Lysnar. A letter was read from the Auckland and Canterbury Chambers regarding the local Chamber’s representations on the question of the, compulsory registration of -wool brands. Hit* Canterbury Chamber suggested the discussion of the -matter .at the conference or chambers to be held in April. The New Zealand Society of .Accountants forwarded a letter enclosing 50 forms of application, with a request that the .secretary -should hand them to applicants -when desired. —It was decided to .agree .to the request, • Notification was received that a full ' report-of the seventh congress of chain, hers of commerce, held in Sydney in September last, was-being printed and Would- he'available shortly.' .- It. was decided-on the motion of Air. Kells, seconded by Air. Corson, that a cleputation wait on Air. AY. -H. Renner, the Chief Postmaster, with reference to the establishment of conveniences for tying up horses at the post office. Some discussion took-place regarding the trawling industry, and the limited area permitted to the local boats by the Department. Eventually. Air. AV. I). Lysnar moved that the’ Chamber forward .a request to the Alinister of Alarine that the river limits for trawling at, this port be extended from East Cape to Portland Island, and not as at present, confined to the bay. He said that personally he was in communication with the Alinister of Alarine on the subject, but thought the Chamber should also move in the matter. Air. Toneycliffe seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Air. Burton -brought up the question of trade discounts,_ and after some discussion it was decided that a scale be drawn up on the lines followed _by other chambers of commerce, and that the matter be referred to the Retailers’ Association, promising it the support of the Chamber, and asking for tho Association’s report. A short discussion took place on the question of direct shipments to the port -which was brought up bv Air. E. AY. Burton. It was ultimately decided that the secretary and Air. Burton draft a. letter to the agents of the different shipping companies making representations on the matter.
