MRS HERBERT GLADSTONE.
Mr Herbert Gladstone has a great future before him as Governor-General of United South Africa. This, of course, means a peerage, which, for a Secretary of State, will no doubt be a viscounty. >His political career may have no great promise, but he is a popular man with his intimates. His chief joy is music, and he is keen on golf, cricket, and shooting. His wife, says an English journal, is. a pretty woman, with large eyes, a j>ale, clear skin, and dark hair, parted in tho middle. She reads and writes, is clever and cultured, dresses in rather artistic fashion, and would have been a “soul” in the nineties. She, like her husband, is fond of music, and has a good and well-trained singing voice. Also, she shares his taste for gardening, real hard gardening, which she practises at her home, Sandycroft, 'Littlestone-on-Sea. Mrs Gladstone lias a collection of lace which includes some pieces of old Flemish lace that- are extremely valuable. She was Miss Dorothy Paget, daughter of the late Sir ltichard Paget, of Cranmore, Somerset. Her father was a Tory of the old school, so her marriage with Mr Gladstone made an alliance between Liberals and Conservatives. In this it re.sembled that of Lord and Lady Tweedmouth, as the late Lord was a noted Radical, and Lady Tweedmoutli is a daughter of Lord Midleton, one of our staunchest Conservatives.
