KAITI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kaiti Seliool Committee was. held last night in the school building, the following members- being present:—Messrs A. J. Fyson (chairman), K. Humphreys, E. F. Sullivan, R. Rowan. J. C. E. Turner and H. E. Hill (secretary). A -letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, stating that Miss K. Morgan had been selected as assistant mistress at the Kaiti School.
The Headmaster (Mr J. IT. Bull) submitted the following report:—“The school re-oponcd on the 7th inst., when a large number of new scholars presented themselves. As is usual at this time of the year, a number of names had to bd struck oil, the final result being that the roll had increased the first week to 192. It is now 195. The average for the month is 188.3, and for the week 190. or 97.4 per cent. The results of the synchronous examination of Standard VI. show that seven pupils of that standard qualified for free admission to the High School, and one gained a certificate of competency. The Board’s agricultural instructor paid a. visit to the school on the 16th inst., and indicated the work he wished undertaken. He considers it necessary to have the selected plot of ground ploughed previous to laying, out. I shall therefore he glad if your committee will sanction the expenditure necessary for that purpose. At present the ground is too hard to do anything with, hut it. will be well to arrange for haying it done as soon as sufficient rain comes.”
The Headmaster stated that the now system of quarterage had been established. and the bulk of it already collected .
The Headmaster’s request that the ground in front of the school shdjuld he ploughed up for the purpose of forming a suitable plot of ground for use and demonstration in connection with classes on agriculture, was discussed at some length, and it was finally decided that the Committee could not see their way clear to give the necessary permission to use this part of the school ground for the purpose desired, but suggested that ground on the westerly side of the school -would be equally suitable and'would not clash with the improvements lately made hy the Committee. On being put to the meeting, a. motion, proposed by Mr. Turner and seconded hy Mr. Hill, embodying the above opinion, was unanimously carried.
The Secretary (Mr Riil) was instruct eel to write to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, stating that the school chimneys had not been altered as arranged, last winter, and that unless something was done at once, the okl trouble with smoke blowing hack in th<> class-rooms would again recur. The Chairman stated that, in conversation with Mr. Boland, the Board’s foreman of works, ho (Mr. Boland) had stated that the only remedy was to raise, the brick-work, at least six feet in order to bring the top of the chimney above the ridging of the roof. A committee, consisting of Messrs K. Humphreys, A. J. Fyson, and R. Rowan was. set up to consider a number of necessary improvements to the school grounds. The Visiting Committee for the month of March are Messrs K. Humphreys- and H. E. Hill. A number of accounts were passed for payment.
