THE FISHING BOAT SHAMROCK.

ABSENT FROM PORT SINCE WEDNESDAY.

Some little anxietv is being felt locally regarding the safety of the fishing smack Shamrock, and her occupants, Messrs Shearer and Nicholls, as the little craft left port on Wednesday. afternoon on an excursion to the Malria, and has not since returned. _ She was seen and spoken by Mr'. McGregor, of the Acracia, about mid-day, off the Mahia, and everything was all right at that time. The occupants of the latter craft stood out then, and. having caught a supply of fish, returned to port on Thursday night. When speaking to him in the middle of that day, Mr. Shearer told Mr. McGregor that he had not got any fish, and was not going home. On Thursday night the Wind came up from the north-east, and remained in that quarter until early yesterday afternoon, when it veered round t-o the. south-east and freshened considerably. It is not thought, so far, that any disaster has overtaken the vessel, but rather that, instead of facing the north-easter, she has run in somewhere for shelter, probably Whareonga. In that case she would probably leave there last evening. Other reasons advanced for the non-return of the vessel are that she may have “eon run ashore and be unable to get off on the present neap tides, or that some mishap may have occurred tp her engine and that she has been awaiting a favorable, wind. It is felt that had there been any disaster some news of it would have reached town before this, out if the conditions are favorable this morning the Acracia is going down to look for her. The Shamrock is_ a staunch little craft of just under five tons register. She has the reputation of being an excellent sea boat, and is fitted with a o-horse-power oil engine.
